A 285 year old lemon was sold at an auction price of 1,400 pounds (about 2.35 million won).

According to the New York Post on the 7th (local time), a lemon believed to have been produced in 1739 was sold for 1,400 pounds at an auction held by the British auction house ‘Brtells Auctioneers & Valuers’ last month.

The lemon was found in a home. Found inside an old cabinet. It is said that the seller discovered this cabinet while sorting out his uncle’s belongings and took it to an auction house because he thought it would be of high value. Later, while photographing a cabinet at an auction house, a lemon was found at the back of a drawer. The cabinet that was also auctioned off sold for 32 pounds (about 50,000 won).

The lemon was discolored to dark brown, but there was no visible damage. The inscription on the lemon reads, “Gift by Piro Francini to Miss E. Baxter on November 4, 1739.” Local media estimated that the lemons were brought to the UK for ‘romantic gift purposes.’

The auction house explained that the lemon bidding competition was unexpectedly fierce. Auctioneer David Brutel said: “I put the lemon up for auction just for fun and expected the bid to be between £40 and £60. You will never see something like this again at auction.”
