Marathoner Kiftum Died in A Car Accident Broke The 2-Hour 1 Minute Barrier

Marathoner Kiftum, Who Broke The 2-Hour 1 Minute Barrier, Kiftum Died in A Car Accident. Kelvin Kiftum (24, Kenya, photo), who broke the marathon world record by running the first full marathon course (42.195 km) in 2 hours and 1 minute in human history, died in a car accident.

According to major foreign media reports such as AFP and Associated Press on the 12th, Kiftum lost his life when the car he was riding in was involved in an accident on the road between Eldoret and Kaptagat, Kenya, around 11 PM on the 11th (local time).

Three people were in the car that was involved in the accident, and Kiftum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were reported to have died. Eldoret is home to the Eldoret Training Center, founded by Kip Keino, the 1500m gold medalist at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

Kiftum is the first marathoner to complete the full marathon course in 2 hours and 1 minute. Kiftum ran the 42.195km full course in 2 hours, 00 minutes and 35 seconds at the 2023 Chicago Marathon held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in October last year. The record was approved by the World Association of Athletics Federations last week. Eliud Kipchoge (39, Kenya) beat the previous record of 2 hours 01 minutes 09 seconds set at the Berlin Marathon in September 2022 by 34 seconds.

Kiftum, who competed in his first full marathon course in December 2022, set the marathon world record in about 10 months. It is said that it was based on extreme training, running 300 km a week.
