Find Allies In The AI Era Samsung, SK, LG Compete To Build A Global United Front

In the era of artificial intelligence (AI), mergers and alliances between global big tech companies are active, and a united front (frenemy, a portmanteau of friend and enemy) is being built to aim for synergy effects by joining hands with competitors. Samsung, SK, and LG also appear to be actively seeking to secure allies, with their heads and CEOs running in all directions.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is visiting Korea for the first time in 10 years, holds a series of meetings with the leaders of Samsung and LG. As part of his first schedule on the 28th, CEO Zuckerberg visited the LG Twin Tower in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul and discussed strategic cooperation with LG Vice Chairman Kwon Bong-seok, LG Electronics CEO Jo Joo-wan, and HE Business Division Head (President) Park Hyeong- se.
They reportedly discussed developing next-generation mixed reality (XR) devices. An IT industry official said, “From a platform-centered meta perspective, collaboration with LG, which has manufacturing capabilities, will be essential to dominate the XR (extended reality) market.” It is reported that CEO Zuckerberg will also meet with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong this afternoon.
The meeting with Samsung is expected to include discussions regarding artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors needed to run the next-generation Large Language Model (LLM) Lama 3. Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI, the operator of ‘ChatGPT’, visited Korea last month and met with SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won and Samsung Electronics Semiconductor (DS) Division Head (President) Kyeong-Hyeon Kye. This is a meeting to reduce dependence on NVIDIA and solve the problem of AI chip supply shortage.
Collaboration between domestic and foreign companies continued at the world’s largest mobile exhibition, ‘Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024’. The heads of SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ sent a ‘love call’ regarding AI cooperation to Samsung Electronics at this year’s MWC.SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won suggested to Samsung Electronics President Roh Tae-moon, “I have something to discuss further, so I would like to meet separately.”
Hwang Hyun- sik, CEO of LG U+, said, “Samsung Electronics has opened a new horizon for AI through on-device AI, and in that respect, it would be good to collaborate well with telecommunication companies’ AI services.” KT CEO Kim Young- seop also showed interest in the ‘Galaxy Ring’ while touring the Samsung Electronics exhibition hall at MWC 2024.
SK Telecom held the inaugural general meeting of the ‘Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA)’, an AI alliance, with Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, the Middle East’s E&Group, Singapore’s Singtel Group, and Japan’s Softbank. They signed a contract to establish a joint venture to jointly develop AI large-scale language models (LLM).
Chairman Choi’s proposed discussion to Samsung Electronics is also related to the AI alliance. Samsung Electronics participated in MWC 2024 as a founding member of the AI-RAN (Radio Access Network) Alliance’, which creates 6G (6th generation mobile communication) technology research and ecosystem by converging AI and wireless communication technologies.
In addition to Samsung Electronics, the alliance included Nvidia, ARM, Microsoft, Northeastern University, Japan’s Softbank, Sweden’s Ericsson, and Finland’s Nokia. Global big tech companies are also active in building AI alliances. Following Open AI, Microsoft (MS) recently decided to cooperate with French AI startup Mistral AI, a competitor of Open AI.
The goal is to dominate the generative AI market while reducing dependence on open AI. Hong In-ki, a professor of electronic engineering at Kyung Hee University, said, “In the AI era, convergence with the platform, data, memory, and semiconductor industries is important to effectively implement AI technology. From a company’s perspective, how well it establishes strategic partnerships determines its future competitiveness.
“To the extent that they do this, the leaders themselves come forward and form alliances,” he said. Kim Myeong-joo, a professor in the Department of Information Security at Seoul Women’s University (Director of the Barun AI Research Center), said, “The AI industry cannot continue to develop without large capital, not only in the learning process but also in the operation process,” adding, “It is risky for a small number of companies to develop related technologies.
“Global collaboration is an inevitable trend,” he said. In the AI era, collaboration between hardware and software companies has become more active, and Apple’s actions in maintaining a closed ecosystem are also attracting attention. Apple has been increasing its profits by building its own ecosystem.
This is contrary to Samsung Electronics’ installation of Google’s AI search function in its first AI phone, the Galaxy S24 series, and Microsoft’s AI chatbot ‘Copilot’ based on Open AI’s Large Language Model (LLM) GPT-4. see. However, Hong In-ki, a professor of electronic engineering at Kyung Hee University, said, “As Apple has a large proportion of loyal customers, it is expected to first respond on its own and then expand its AI strategy and cooperate with big tech as needed.”
