Naver Unveils World's First Web Platform-Based Robot OS ‘Speed’ Of Ecosystem Expansion

Naver has unveiled the world’s first web platform-based robot-specific operating system ( OS ). Naver ultimately plans to popularize robots by building a completely open ecosystem. On the 5th, Naver introduced the world’s first web platform-based robot-specific OS , ‘ARC mind powered by Whale OS ‘,

at Naver Building 1784 located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do . Seok Sang-ok, CEO of Naver Labs , introduced ArchMind to the world through a keynote speech at LEAP 2024 held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 5th (local time) .

ArchMind is a web platform-based robot-specific OS jointly built by Naver Cloud and Naver Labs . Naver’s web platform, OS , and robot technology are integrated. The goal is to further enrich the robot ecosystem by linking web developers with robot service development. The open web platform is expected to allow any web developer to develop new robot services.

Baek Jong-yoon, senior leader at Naver Labs, said at a press conference that day, “ Our goal is to build a robot OS ecosystem similar to the mobile OS ecosystem,” and added, “However, rather than creating a new ecosystem, we will connect the web ecosystem that has already been developed for a long time with ArchMind to create a variety of robots. “The direction is to connect services so they can come out into the world,” he explained.

The objective is to establish a connection between the current web ecosystem and the realm of robotics.

Currently, the robot market is continuously expanding. IMARC, a global market research firm, predicts that the global robot software market will grow at an average annual rate of 18.6 % from USD 14.6 billion (approximately KRW 19.4399 trillion) in 2022, expanding to USD 43.5 billion (approximately KRW 57.9202 trillion) in 2028. predicted. QY Research predicted that the global market size of the robot OS market will grow at an average annual rate of 11.58%, reaching $991.91 million (approximately KRW 1.3207 trillion) in 2028.

Naver emphasized that ArchMind is lighter and more expandable than existing OSs due to its web platform-based nature. It is said to be lighter and faster than existing robot OSs as it consists of a simple architecture without unnecessary elements. The robot OS previously introduced by Softbank, Amazon, and Microsoft ( MS ) was weak in versatility and scalability, so to implement services, developers had to create services specialized for each robot hardware.

In contrast, ArchMind can use the scalability and standards of the web as is. From a developer’s perspective, they can develop robot services in accordance with web standards and easily integrate and expand them on the web. Any web developer around the world can easily develop a robot-specific service by simply additionally developing the robot-specific application programming interface ( API ) provided by Archmind in accordance with web standards .

Strengthening robot OS partnership… The first partner is ‘Samsung’

As ArchMind does not need to use development tools dependent on a specific OS , it is expected to show a significant difference from existing robot OSs in terms of ecosystem expandability. As there is no need to develop additional specialized apps for each manufacturer, the efficiency of robot-related software development is expected to increase significantly, further accelerating the expansion of the ecosystem. Web developers can develop robot services in line with web standards through robot-specific APIs , HTML , CSS , etc., and easily integrate and expand them on the web.

Naver has decided to collaborate with various companies to expand the robot OS ecosystem. At the same time, details of the ongoing next-generation robot platform collaboration with Samsung Electronics (005930) were revealed. After signing a private memorandum of understanding ( MOU ) in November last year, Samsung Electronics will provide semiconductor solutions such as system-on-chip ( SoC ) and image sensors, and Naver will provide OS and software solutions on a single Robot Edge Computing ( REC ) platform. We have continued to work on implementing integration.

Baek Jong-yoon, senior leader, said, “We will strive to further expand the ecosystem through continued cooperation with Samsung Electronics.” A Samsung Electronics official who visited the site that day also said, “It is very meaningful to be able to enter the robot ecosystem through collaboration with Naver,” and said that they will continue to expand cooperation on robot OS in the future.

Naver plans to first introduce ArchMind to various robot services operated at its headquarters, Naver 1784, to stabilize the service, and then continue to expand the ecosystem through partnerships.
