There has been news that Open AI, a leader in the generative AI (artificial intelligence) field, is Open AI is negotiating news copyrights with a number of global media companies. Bloomberg News reported on the 11th (local time) that Open AI is pursuing licensing agreements with CNN, Fox, and Time magazine.
Extensive Content Licensing Discussions
According to Bloomberg’s sources, Open AI is discussing a licensing agreement for Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN articles for training and content loading of its AI models, including Chat GPT. In addition, Open AI is negotiating news with CNN and Fox include not only text such as articles but also images and videos.
Time Magazine’s Optimistic Stance
Time CEO Jessica Sibley acknowledged being “in discussions with Open AI,” unlike the other two media outlets. She told Bloomberg that she was “optimistic that we can reach an agreement that reflects the fair value of the content.”
Diversification of Licensing Agreements
Open AI previously signed a licensing agreement with the Associated Press and the American Journalism Project in July of last year. Recently, they inked a multi-year news usage agreement worth tens of millions of dollars with Axel Springer, a multinational media group that owns Politico and others.
Legal Challenges and Counter-Statements
However, Open AI, along with its sponsor MS (Microsoft), is currently facing various copyright infringement lawsuits, including a recent one from the New York Times (NYT). In response, the company issued a counter-statement, stating that “NYT’s lawsuit has no merit” and that “the cases cited by NYT were intentionally fabricated.”
GPT Store Launch and Marketplace Dynamics
Meanwhile, on the 10th (local time), Open AI launched ‘GPT Store,’ an AI chatbot marketplace based on its AI model. The platform allows users to create customized chat GPT services without coding, share them, and trade them similar to a smartphone app market.
Exponential Sales Growth and Future Projections
Open AI’s sales last year are estimated at $1.6 billion (approximately 2 trillion won), marking an increase of more than 57 times compared to the previous year. Some executives reportedly expect to achieve $5 billion in sales this year.
