UNHCR Staff Suspected Of Involvement With Hamas – US Stops Support UNRWA “immediately dismisses” 12 employees suspected of involvement in Hamas surprise attack. US suspends additional aid Suspicions have been raised that some employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) were involved in Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

According to CNN on the 26th (local time), UNRWA Secretary-General Philip Lazarini said there was information that some UNRWA employees participated in Hamas’ attack on Israel. Secretary-General Lazarini said an investigation into the alleged involvement had been launched and those involved would be held accountable, including criminal prosecution. The 12 employees under suspicion are scheduled to be fired immediately.

When these suspicions were raised, the U.S. State Department decided to temporarily suspend additional funding to UNRWA. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller revealed this in a statement, adding that Secretary of State Tony Blinken had “stressed the need for a thorough and prompt investigation into this matter” in a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

He also said that Secretary-General Guterres promised to take decisive action if the suspicions are found to be true as a result of the investigation. Israel welcomed the US decision to suspend support. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said through social networking service (SNS)

He continued, “A major change must occur to ensure that international efforts, funding, and humanitarian initiatives do not encourage Hamas terrorism and massacres of Israelis,” and added, “Terrorism disguised as humanitarian work is a disgrace to the United Nations and the principles it stands for.”
