Toyota Motor Company said that it was discovered that it had committed irregularities in the process of output testing for quality certification of diesel engines produced by its group company, Toyota Automatic Loom, and decided to suspend shipment of 10 models, including the Land Cruiser Prado, equipped with the engine in question the day before.

Previously, Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Company, conducted an additional investigation after the issue of fraudulent quality certification arose in April last year and discovered that 174 instances of fraud had occurred in the process of crash, exhaust gas, and fuel efficiency tests of 64 vehicle models since 1989. It is currently undergoing a large-scale investigation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Due to this problem, Daihatsu’s four factories in Japan have been shut down since December of last year. Hino Motors, another subsidiary of Toyota Motor Company, also had its model designation canceled in 2022 after manipulation of emissions and fuel efficiency was revealed.

On this day, Chairman Toyota presented the new group vision with the phrase, ‘Let’s invent the next path.’ The Toyota Group was originally scheduled to announce its new vision on February 14, the birthday of founder Sakichi Toyoda, but the schedule was moved up to this day as new quality certification fraud issues arose. Current Chairman Toyoda is the great-grandson of the company’s founder.
