According to the Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo Electric Power Company announced that around 9 a.m. on this day, it discovered that water was leaking from the exhaust port on the exterior wall of the building, which is used to remove hydrogen generated from a purification device for contaminated water before treatment.
At the time of the accident, the purification equipment was stopped and work was being done to remove contamination by flowing fresh water into the pipe in preparation for inspection.
It is reported that a valve that should have been closed was accidentally opened, allowing the contaminated water remaining in the pipe and the cleaning water to mix and flow out through the exhaust port.
Tokyo Electric Power Company estimated that the amount of leaked contaminated water was 5.5 tons and the total amount of leaked radioactive material was 22 billion becquerels (㏃).
Although there was no leakage to the outside of the nuclear power plant, such as the sea, there is a possibility that the contaminated water may have seeped into the soil outside the building, so Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to collect this soil in the future.
