Lemon Appears At Auction: Winning Bid Exceeds Expectations
Lemon Appears At Auction
A 285-year-old Lemon appears at auction, the lemon has been listed at an auction house in the UK and is becoming a hot topic. The lemon in question was not rotten and was sold at a high price of about 2.4 million won.
On the 7th (local time), local media reported that a 285-year-old lemon put up for sale on January 16 by ‘Brtells Auctioneers & Valuers’, an auction house located in Newport, was sold for $1,800 (about 2.4 million won). The lemon in question was found in a cabinet made in the 19th century, and the cabinet that stored the lemon was also put up for auction, but was sold for a relatively small amount of $40 (about 43,000 won).
What was unusual was that the lemon did not rot even after a long time had passed. The lemon’s peel had turned dark brown due to exposure to air, but no particularly rotted or damaged parts were found. The phrase “Pi Ru Francini to this Miss Baxter, November 4, 1739” is engraved on the lemon peel, and local media reports that before lemons were cultivated in England, lemons were brought from India as gifts and were called Pi Ru Francini. It was speculated that the man may have given it to Ms. Baxter as a gift for romantic purposes.
“For a bit of fun, we estimated the lemon’s price at £40 to £60,” said auctioneer David Brutel. The lemon was ultimately sold for more than 20 times the auctioneer’s estimated price. “You will never see something like this at auction again,” added Brtel.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that food or groceries that have been out of date for a long time have been put up for auction in the UK. In August 2017, a piece of the wedding cake used in the wedding of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton six years ago (April 29, 2011) was put up for auction and attracted attention. The piece of cake in question was received as a gift by one of the guests at the wedding and kept frozen before being put up for auction.
The estimated auction price was $1,000 to $1,550 (approximately 1.12 to 1.74 million won). At the time, experts asserted that fruit cakes could be eaten even after the expiration date. He advised that although there is a very small amount of moisture remaining in old fruit cakes, there is no bacteria, so there is no harm to health.
