Angry European Farmers Tractor Protesters 'Advance' On EU Headquarters

A ‘tractor army’ of angry European farmers advanced to the threshold of the European Union headquarters. Farmers who gathered again in Brussels, Belgium, where the EU Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting was held about three weeks after the EU Summit earlier this month, fiercely protested against imports of agricultural products and decreased income.

According to the Brussels police, as of 11 a.m. on this day, about 900 tractors were gathered in the EU district of Brussels. The tractor broke through the barricade and rushed to the area near Schumann Square, about 300 meters away from the Executive Committee building.

Afterwards, dangerous scenes were captured everywhere, such as a long line of tractors honking their horns continuously and trying to rush towards the riot police stationed around the EU headquarters. Some farmers piled dozens of tires in the middle of the road passing between the executive committee and board buildings, covered them with hay, and set them on fire.

Each tractor had banners such as ‘Stop the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement’ and ‘Imported agricultural products are polluting’.

Previously, the EU hastily introduced countermeasures in response to the tractor protests that spread across the region, such as temporarily exempting farmers from the obligation to fallow land and effectively limiting tariff exemption benefits for Ukrainian agricultural products.

We also promised to prepare measures to ease the administrative burden on farms. However, even emergency measures could not appease angry Nongshim. Timothy Vettel, a member of the farmers’ union in the Walloon region of southern Belgium, told local media outlet Belga News, “The Commission proposed suspension of environmental regulations and administrative easing that we did not request,” adding, “Of course, these are necessary measures for farmers, but it is necessary to set fair prices for agricultural products. “It does not address our highest priority needs,” he said.

On this day, police controlled vehicles near the EU headquarters and ordered public transportation, including subways and buses, to stop operating.
