Among them, the company with the longest test mileage last year was Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, with a total of over 4.8 million miles (about 7.725 million km). Next, Cruz, a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), had more than 2.6 million miles (about 4,184,000 km), and Zoox, an Amazon subsidiary, had more than 700,000 miles (about 1,126,000 km).

Among these, Waymo and Cruise significantly expanded their business by receiving permission for 24-hour robotaxi (unmanned taxi) service in San Francisco in August last year.

However, about two months later, an additional accident occurred in which a woman who fell on the road in a car accident was crushed under a Cruise robotaxi and suffered serious injuries, and Cruise has been under intense investigation by regulatory authorities.

Compared to Waymo or Cruise, which operate unmanned, Apple is testing autonomous driving with a driver on board, and no accidents or other problems have been reported yet.

WP reported that while Cruise and Waymo have faltered in the face of various regulations and criticism over robotaxi safety issues, Apple appears to be quietly but aggressively growing its business.

However, Bloomberg News reported last month that Apple has delayed the launch of the Apple Car to 2028 and is developing a function that will assist the driver instead of fully autonomous driving.

Professor Ed Walters, who teaches self-driving car law at Georgetown University, explained that although the likelihood of accidents will increase as companies expand their autonomous driving experiments, the benefits of this technology are so great that it is difficult to slow down the industry’s development. .

“There were definitely some setbacks last year, but there was also a lot of progress,” Walters said. “I think 2024 will be a major breakthrough in machine learning for self-driving cars.”
