Biden Met With Navalnys Family: More Than 500 Russia Sanctions Imposed Tomorrow
U.S. President Joe Biden met with Navalnys family, Biden personally met the wife and children of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who died in prison while promoting a reform movement against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Biden administration plans to announce additional extensive sanctions against Russia the next day. More than 500 targets of sanctions have been identified.
According to the White House on the 22nd (local time), President Biden met Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya and daughter Dasha Navalnaya in San Francisco on this day and expressed condolences. “Navalny’s courage and legacy will live on through countless others across Russia fighting for democracy and human rights,” he emphasized.
It was also confirmed that the Biden administration will implement sanctions against Russia on the 23rd in response to Navalny’s death and Russia’s cruel and illegal invasion of Ukraine. President Biden also told reporters immediately afterwards, “It was an honor to meet Navalny’s wife and daughter,” and added, “We will announce sanctions tomorrow against Putin, who is responsible for Navalny’s death.”
U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Willy Adeyemo announced that the sanctions against Russia announced the next day would apply to more than 500 locations. He said , “This is the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and to hold accountable for the death in prison of Russian anti-government activist Alexei Navalny,” and that these sanctions will also apply to Russia’s military industrial complex and third-country companies that help secure supplies.
Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Vitoria Nuland also said at an event at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) that day that the sanctions are “aimed at dealing a blow to Putin’s war machine,” and that some of the hundreds of sanctions are aimed at those responsible for Navalny’s death. Currently, major Western countries, including the United States, are condemning President Putin’s involvement in Navalny’s death, while Russia is strongly denying this. Russia also expressed displeasure at President Biden’s explicit swearing the previous day, saying, “We have ‘crazy SOBs’ like Putin and others.” Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “It only lowers the values of the United States,” and sarcastically said, “Biden may be showing Hollywood cowboy-style behavior for domestic political gain.”
