Controversy continues over the selection of a naturalized Ukrainian as the winner of a beauty pageant with a long history in Japan. According to the Sankei Shimbun, the grand prize of the ‘Miss Japan Grand Prix’ at the ’56th Miss Japan Contest’ held in Tokyo on the 22nd went to Ukrainian model Sino Carolina (27). Sino’s parents are both Ukrainian. She was born in Ukraine, and when her mother remarried a Japaneseness man, she moved to Japan and grew up there from the age of five. She acquired Japanese nationality in 2022, and she currently lives in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.

In her acceptance speech, Shino said, “Ever since she was young, she has lived as Japanese. “I feel grateful that she has been recognized as Japanese,” she said. “The Japaneseness heart resides on the inside, not on the outside. ” She proclaimed her goal to create a community that avoids assessing individuals solely based on their external appearance.

In this competition, 30 judges evaluated the ‘Japanese beauty’ in the inner, outer, and behavior of the candidates. The organizer introduced the Grand Prix award that Shino received as “the highest award given to a young, beautiful woman full of potential.” Qualifications for participation in the competition included ‘Japanese nationality’ and ‘unmarried woman’.

However, some netizens protested the news of her receiving Shino’s award. Japaneseness social media sparked a debate surrounding his Western features, which encompassed his fair complexion, deep-set eyes, prominent double eyelids, and elevated nose bridge. Various opinions emerged, ranging from“ Does he meet the standards of Japaneseness?” and “He was not born in Japan, and he only acquired nationality recently.” It was raised. On the other hand, some pointed out that Shino’s award would not be a problem. Kazue Fujiwara, a political and media critic, said, “There should be no ‘racial wall’ erected in screening,” and “Having Japanese nationality meets the ‘necessary and sufficient’ condition.”

This contest, which started in 1950, has selected about 10 people every year in each category, including ‘Water Angel’, ‘Tree and Forest Ambassador’, ‘Miss Sports’, and ‘Miss Kimono’. Alumni of this event include actress Norika Fujiwara (53), who served as a goodwill ambassador during the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, and Megumi Kaneko (46), a former member of the House of Representatives from the Liberal Democratic Party. It is such a representative beauty pageant that last year’s winners took a group photo with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the Prime Minister’s residence in Tokyo.
