Figure Skater Valieva in Drug Controversy: Suspension For 4 Years, Medal Revoked
Russian Figure Skater Valieva has been banned from competing for four years after being found guilty of using banned substances. In addition, the Russian national team’s gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was also invalidated.
The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, said in a statement on the 29th local time that Valieva had been found to have violated the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) anti-doping rules and suspended her as an athlete for four years.
Valieva’s suspension period runs from December 2021, when her doping test took place, to December next year. The Arbitration Tribunal found that Figure Skater Valieva had tested positive for trimetazidine, a drug banned under her anti-doping rules.
This drug, which is an ingredient in the treatment of angina pectoris, was banned in 2014 because it can be used to improve the physical efficiency of athletes. The court decided that Valieva would also be stripped of her gold medal won by Russia in the team event at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022, after her doping test.
“To the extent that Valiyeva helped her win the team event, her gold medal is invalidated,” the court ruled. “All competitive results achieved by Figure Skater Valieva since then are invalidated.” I did.
Since her junior days, Figure Skater Valieva has reliably performed the quadruple (four rotations) jump, which is difficult for even male athletes to do, and she has been breaking her world record with overwhelming prowess.
She then became embroiled in controversy in December 2021 when her drug test taken at the Russian National Figure Skating Championships tested positive for trimetazidine. The following February she participated in the Beijing Winter Olympics, where she won a gold medal in the team event, but did not win a medal in the individual event.
