According to Bloomberg News and the New York Times (NYT) on the 1st (local time), Musk filed a lawsuit at the San Francisco High School the day before, demanding that OpenAI and Altman cease commercial business and disclose artificial intelligence (AI) technology as open source. filed in court.
In the complaint submitted to the court, Musk said, “To this day, OpenAI’s website continues to proclaim that the company’s mission is to ensure that AGI (artificial general intelligence) ‘benefits all humanity.'” However, in reality, OpenAI “AI has become a closed-source, de facto subsidiary of Microsoft (MS), the world’s largest technology company,” he argued.
Musk also said that in 2015, after receiving a proposal from Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, he agreed to create a non-profit research institute to develop AGI for the “good of humanity,” releasing the technology as open source and sharing it with the world. He emphasized that this was the core intention.
Musk said that from 2016 to 2020, he donated more than $44 million (approximately 58.8 billion won) to OpenAI and also paid the company’s initial office rent.
However, he explained that as Open AI management became more interested in making money with new AI technology, friction grew with him, who wanted the company to remain a research institute.
Musk eventually resigned from Open AI’s board of directors in 2018 and sold all of his investment shares.
Musk asked the court to force OpenAI to stop benefiting Microsoft and Altman personally and to open all research results and technologies to the public.
He also requested that Altman be ordered to give up money he earned as a result of illegal practices at Open AI.
In addition, Musk claimed that he suffered an unspecified amount of damages and said that if he receives compensation as a result of this lawsuit, he will donate it to charity.
Bloomberg said that this lawsuit “shows an expanded conflict between the two most notable players in the AI field.”
The media also predicted that the outcome of this lawsuit will have a significant impact not only on Open AI but also on Microsoft, which invested about $13 billion (about 17 trillion won) in the company.
OpenAI and Microsoft have not yet released a comment or position on this.
Previously, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT in earnest last year, creating an AI craze, Musk publicly criticized OpenAI several times, saying that OpenAI, along with Microsoft, is pursuing profit with dangerous AI technology and that ChatGPT is spreading politically false content.
He founded xAI, an AI development startup, in July of last year, saying he would develop AI that pursues the truth and explores the nature of the universe against for-profit companies such as OpenAI. Then, in December of the same year, he unveiled his first AI chatbot, ‘Grok’.
