Navalnys Wife: Are You Fighting Putin? I Have No Right To Give Up

Yulia Navalnaya (47), Navalnys wife,  the wife of Russian anti-government activist Alexei Navalny, who died mysteriously in prison, declared that she will continue to fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin. On the 20th (local time), the New York Times described Navalnaya as ‘wife, guardian, and current political heir’ and paid attention to what she said on SNS (social network service) the day before.

The day before, Navalnaya criticized President Putin in front of the cameras, three days after the news of Navalny’s death broke. She also said she would take up her husband’s cause and urged the Russian people to join her. “By killing Navalny, Putin killed half of me, half of my heart, half of my soul,” he said in the video. “But I still have half left. And I don’t have the right to give up yet.”

This is a change in Navalnaya’s actions, as she had previously avoided public political activities, saying her role was to protect Navalny and her two children. In response, Russia’s state propaganda machine went to work, portraying him as someone who lived a lavish lifestyle, frequenting resorts and celebrity parties.

On the other hand, Navalnaya’s friends and colleagues described her as Navalny’s protector, publicist, shoulder for Navalny to cry on, and his closest advisor. Evgenia Albatz, a prominent Harvard University contributor, also said, “Politician Alexei Navalny was two people: Yulia and Alexei.”

Russian journalist and historian Mikhail Zhigar also called the Navalny couple a “Hollywood couple” centered on their close bond. He stated, “Navalnaya poses a lesser political burden for him, making it more probable for him to collaborate with the infamous Russian opposition.”
