OpenAI Video Generation AI Sora Will Be Available To The Public Within This Year

OpenAI’s video-generating artificial intelligence AI Sora, which was released last month, is expected to be available to the public by the second half of this year. Currently, only a limited number of creators are available, but the plan is to open it to the public after a few months.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) released on the 13th (local time), OpenAI Mira Murati, the developer of ChatGPT, said, “The conch will be available to the public this year,” adding, “It could be several months later.” No specific timing was mentioned, but WSJ predicted, “OpenAI is expected to officially release conch (for the general public) in the second half of this year.”

Sora is an AI that creates videos according to prompts. “You can quickly produce videos up to a minute long, including multiple characters, certain types of movements, and complicated scenes,” OpenAI said earlier. “Since we have a deep understanding of the language, we can accurately interpret prompts and create attractive characters that express vivid emotions.”

CTO Murati said Sora plans to “integrate sound” to make more realistic videos. “We are also considering ways to allow users to edit video content created by Sora,” he added. Regarding the data used for Sora’s training, he answered only “publicly available or authorized data” and confirmed that he was writing content from ‘Shutterstock’, an image and video company that has partnered with OpenAI.

He also mentioned concerns about the spread of deepfakes using generated AI ahead of elections around the world, including the U.S. Presidential election this year. CTO Murati said, “When Sora is released, it will not be possible to create an image of a public figure, and the video will display a watermark to distinguish it from the real thing.”
