Operation Target For 2027 Taiwan's TSMC Second Factory Construction This Year

Taiwan’s TSMC “Japan’s second factory begins construction this year “Operation target for 2027”. Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s largest foundry (semiconductor consignment production) company, is building a second factory in Japan.

According to Reuters on the 6th, TSMC announced that it will build a second factory in Japan by the end of 2027, and that with support from the Japanese government, its total investment in ventures in Japan will be more than $20 billion (about 27 trillion won).

He added that in response to increasing customer demand, a second factory will be built in Kumamoto, southern Japan, and construction will begin by the end of this year. Previously, TSMC announced plans to build its first factory in Kumamoto in 2021, worth $7 billion (about 9.3 trillion won).

The factory will hold a completion ceremony on the 24th and will produce 12, 16, 22, and 28 nm (nanometers, 1 billionth of a meter) process products from the end of this year.

TSMC predicts that the two factories in Kumamoto will be able to produce more than 100,000 12-inch wafers per month to be used in automotive, industrial, consumer and high-performance computing-related applications.

TSMC holds an 86.5% stake in its Japanese venture, Japan’s Sony Group holds 6%, Denso holds 5.5%, and Toyota holds 2%.
