Putin’s Greatest Enemy Navalny died In Siberian Prison
Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny died while in prison, RIA Novosti reported on the 16th (local time), citing prison authorities. Russian Federal Penitentiary authorities announced on this day that Navalny died at the 3rd prison in the Yamanenenets Autonomous Region in Russia’s northernmost Siberia region.
The authorities said, “Navalny was not in good condition after the walk and lost consciousness almost immediately,” and medical staff administered first aid, but they confirmed Navalny’s death and explained that they are investigating the exact cause of death according to procedures.
Navalny’s associates said on Telegram that nothing had been confirmed about Navalny’s death and that his lawyer was heading to the prison to investigate the situation.
Attorney Leonid Solovyov claimed to the independent media outlet Novaya Gazeta, “I visited Navalny two days ago (the 14th), but everything was fine then.”The Kremlin announced that it had reported Navalny’s death to Russian President Vladimir Putin and that “the responsibility to determine the cause of death lies with the medical staff.”
Navalny led the anti-government movement by exposing the corruption of high-ranking Russian officials through the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which he founded in 2011, and was considered President Putin’s biggest political opponent.
The organizations he founded, including the Anti-Corruption Foundation, the Foundation for the Protection of Civil Rights, and Navalny Headquarters, were designated as ‘extremist organizations’ by Russian authorities.
He was sentenced to a total of more than 30 years in prison on charges of illegal acquisition of money, extremist activities, and fraud, and has been serving his sentence since January 2021. He showed signs of poisoning on a domestic flight in August 2020, collapsed, fell into a coma, was treated at a German hospital, and was arrested and charged as soon as he returned to Korea.
Prison No. 3, where Navalny died, is notorious for its cold and harsh conditions, so it is also nicknamed the “Arctic Wolf.” He was imprisoned in Prison No. 6 in Melekovo, about 235 km from Moscow, and was transferred to this prison in December last year.
Navalny‘s associates claimed that the Russian authorities took this action to isolate him ahead of the presidential election.
