Samsung's Triple Foldable Phone Set to Outshine Huawei

Samsung Electronics will introduce a ‘triple foldable phone’ that folds twice this year. Foreign press: “I don’t think we will lose our players to Huawei.”

There has been speculation that Samsung Electronics will launch a ‘triple foldable phone’ that folds the screen twice for the first time this year. On the 13th (local time), American IT media outlet Phone Arena quoted IT tipster (information leaker) Levegners and reported that Samsung Electronics is preparing to unveil a new triple foldable smartphone this year.

The tipster said through his , Samsung would not want to miss out on the title of ‘world’s first’,” he claimed. Previously, local Chinese media, including Gizmo China, reported that Huawei is preparing to mass produce a tri-fold foldable phone with a screen that folds twice, with the goal of launching in the second quarter of this year. However, some point out that even if Huawei launches the ‘world’s first’ triple phone in February, it will not be enough to dominate the market.

In relation to this, Phone Arena said, “Even if Huawei introduces the Triple Fold before Samsung, it is virtually impossible to use Google applications on Huawei phones due to U.S. sanctions,” and added, “As a result, Samsung may have the upper hand.” The triple foldable phone, which is expected to be a new form factor, has the advantage of being able to fold a large screen like a tablet PC twice and carry it in a compact state.

However, due to the large screen, the size of the device itself may be larger and heavier than existing foldable phones, and because it is folded twice, it may also be somewhat thicker. Most of the currently commercialized foldable phones are similar to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, and fold the screen once horizontally or vertically. Chinese companies including Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo have already introduced similar foldable phones.

According to market research firm Trend Force, foldable smartphone shipments last year were estimated at 18.3 million units, up 43% from the previous year. The size of the foldable phone market is expected to grow to 25.2 million units this year and 70 million units in 2027. As the foldable phone market expands, Chinese brands are gradually increasing their market share. In fact, Samsung Electronics‘ foldable market share was 82% in 2022, but fell to 68% in 2023.
