There Is A High Possibility Of Famine In The Northern Part Of The Gaza Strip

U.S. official: “There is a high possibility of famine in the northern part of the Gaza Strip… relief support is needed.”

This official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters on the 29th (local time), “There is a high possibility that (famine) already exists in the northern region (of the Gaza Strip).”

He continued, “There is a serious risk of famine in the south and center, but it is not yet at that level,” adding, “On average, 250 relief trucks entered the Gaza Strip per day last week, and more trucks are needed.”

These comments are consistent with the outlook of the latest report by the ‘Integrated Food Security Phase’ (IPC), an international organization that cooperates with UN agencies to identify the global food crisis.

The report stated that food shortages are serious throughout the Gaza Strip, and that the situation in the north is particularly difficult. He then predicted that this region could reach a famine level at any time between now and May.

Famine is the highest level among the IPC’s food crisis severity classification criteria: ‘Normal (Minimal) – Warning (Stressed) – Crisis (Emergency) – Catastrophe (Famine)’.

On the 27th, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric also said that there were enormous difficulties in procuring relief supplies, pointing out problems such as lack of security and a shortage of trucks.

However, Israel’s position is that it has been increasing the import of relief goods to the Gaza Strip and that it is not responsible for the delay in the procurement of relief goods.

They then claim that the UN and aid organizations are responsible for procuring relief supplies, and that the Palestinian armed political faction Hamas is stealing relief supplies meant for civilians.

Meanwhile, the United States is opposing Israel’s ground battle in Rafah due to concerns about large-scale civilian casualties. However, Israel is showing its will to press ahead with the ground war, saying it will ensure the evacuation of refugees and humanitarian support.
