US House of Representatives Passes Bill To Ban Chinese App TikTok Is It A Complete Ban?
There is a growing possibility that TikTok, the video-sharing app of Chinese parent company ByteDance, will not be available in the United States. US House of Representatives passes bill to Ban Chinese App TikTok.
Confirming that there is no difference of opinion between the ruling Democratic Party and the opposition Republican Party when it comes to U.S. national security, a bill banning the use of TikTok was unanimously passed by the standing committee.
On the 7th (local time), the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed a bill banning the use of TikTok in the U.S. App Store until the complete sale of ByteDance, citing national security concerns.
About 20 lawmakers participated in proposing this bill, including Republican Rep. Michael Gallagher, chairman of the Special Committee on U.S.-China Strategic Competition, and Rep. Raja Krishnamurti, Democratic ranking member of the special committee.
The key content of the bill is that ByteDance must sell TikTok within 165 days after the bill takes effect. If ByteDance does not implement this, selling TikTok in the US app store will be made illegal. The bill also includes a similar ban on other apps “controlled by companies of hostile countries.”
CNN evaluated that “the bill contains provisions that could limit TikTok traffic and content transmission on a wide range of ‘internet hosting’ services.” He then predicted, “This is the strongest bill related to TikTok regulation, and if enacted, it could have a significant impact on the industry as a whole.”
The White House and Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson expressed support for the bill. However, it is unclear whether this bill will easily pass the Senate. TikTok, used by 170 million people in the United States, is a video sharing app that is gaining explosive popularity, especially among young people.
The U.S. government and political circles have been concerned about the possibility of user information flowing to the Chinese government, pointing out that TikTok’s parent company is a Chinese company. The White House already banned the use of TikTok across all federal government agencies last year.
TikTok pursued a plan to separately manage user information by setting up a separate server in the United States. In addition, efforts were made to block the actions of the US government and Congress through influencers, but it was not enough to prevent the bill from being passed.
Immediately after the passage of this bill, TikTok strongly opposed it.
TikTok raised its voice, saying, “This bill means a complete ban of TikTok throughout the United States.” He added, “This is a measure that takes away the constitutional right to freedom of expression from 170 million Americans.”
