Samsung Launches AI Phones Real-time Call Interpretation Without Internet

Real-time interpretation during calls even when the internet is cut off… Samsung Electronics opens the era of AI phones, Samsung Launches AI Phones.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now at your fingertips, and your daily life begins with AI anytime, anywhere on your smartphone. Samsung Electronics held a new product launch event (Galaxy Unpacked 2024) at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA on the 17th (local time) and unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the ‘Galaxy S24 Series.’ The Galaxy S24 is the first Samsung Electronics smartphone to implement ‘on-device (built-in) AI.’ This means that AI operation is possible on the device itself without going through Samsung Electronics’ cloud (virtual server). It is known as an ‘AI phone’ in the true sense of the word, allowing you to use AI functions even when not connected.

Over the past few years, smartphones have continued to undergo minor evolutions that improve existing features, such as camera performance. The emergence of AI phones is a long-awaited technological ‘quantum jump’ in the smartphone industry. The Galaxy S24 series, which embraces AI, has achieved everything from simple text messages to recording and cameras. Roh Tae-moon, head of the MX division (president), who leads Samsung Electronics’ smartphone business, said, “The Galaxy S24 series will go beyond the smartphone era and open the ‘era of AI phones.’”

All three models of the Galaxy S24 series (S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra) operate based on ‘Galaxy AI’ developed by Samsung Electronics for the Galaxy. Galaxy AI utilizes on-device AI or cloud AI depending on need. Interpretation, translation, photo and video editing, etc., are performed on the device itself, but some functions, such as AI search, are processed using the cloud.

Galaxy AI’s representative function is real-time interpretation. If a Korean speaker talks to an English speaker, what the other person says in English is communicated first, followed by a Korean interpretation. There are 13 supported languages, including English and Chinese. “Interpretation is done right from the built-in phone app without the need to download a separate application,” Samsung Electronics said. “Even if only one of the parties on the call uses the Galaxy S24, it is possible regardless of the other party’s device type or carrier,” explained.

Real-time translation is also supported. The keyboard itself has a translation function, so you can immediately translate and send it to your desired language not only in basic text apps but also in messengers such as KakaoTalk. AI also suggests appropriate phrases. For example, if you type ‘Where is the meeting held today?’

in Korean, it will be immediately translated into the desired language, and if you select the ‘polite’ mode, the tone will change to a more polite tone. AI has also been added to the built-in memo and voice recording apps. It has become possible to use AI to summarize notes. When you record a meeting, etc., with a voice recording app, it recognizes up to 10 speakers, separates each person’s voice, and converts it into text.

You can also summarize or translate it. AI-based search is also supported. If you need to search while surfing the web or using social networking services (SNS), you can circle or underline the part you are curious about with your finger, and related information will appear immediately, without having to open a separate search app. If you circle a photo of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France that you found while using social media, information including name, location, and history will be displayed at the bottom of the photo. You can also ask follow-up questions such as ‘Best time to visit?’

“The camera has also been noticeably improved thanks to AI.” The newly introduced ‘generative editing’ is based on generative AI, a function that goes beyond simple editing and even synthesis. Using this, AI will naturally fill in the background that has been cut out by rotating the photo, and you can isolate specific subjects in the photo and move them to the desired location. AI sometimes suggests appropriate editing first. For example, in the case of a photo with a shadow on the face, AI automatically suggests ‘shadow and reflection removal.’ If you command it to execute, the shadow on your face will disappear in just a few seconds.

Samsung Electronics automatically displays a watermark and ‘metadata (attribute information)’ on all images edited based on generative AI. A Samsung Electronics official said, “Through this, users can easily confirm that the image was created or edited by AI.”

In the case of videos, there is an ‘Instant Slow Motion’ function that changes normal speed videos to play slower. When you use this function, AI creates additional new frames between frames of the video to create a natural slow-motion video.

Starting with the Galaxy S24, devices implementing on-device AI are expected to flood the smartphone market this year. At the end of last year, Google applied a lightweight version of its self-developed giant language model ‘Geminii’ to the smartphone Pixel 8 Pro. China’s Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and America’s Motorola are also preparing to launch on-device AI phones, and Apple is also expected to embed AI in its new iPhone to be unveiled in the second half of the year.

According to market research firm IDC, Samsung Electronics lost its top spot in global smartphone shipments to Apple last year. Despite risks originating from China, Apple recorded a market share of 20.1%, slightly ahead of Samsung Electronics (19.4%). This is the first time in 13 years since 2010 that Samsung Electronics has missed the top spot in annual smartphone shipments.

Galaxy AI is a counterattack that Samsung Electronics pulled out in this crisis. “The intention is to dominate the market by being the first to bring out an AI phone.” Despite the inevitable cost increase due to built-in AI, the fact that the domestic prices of the basic and plus models were barely raised is also seen as a strategy to maximize sales.

However, the Ultra model has increased by about 100,000 to 160,000 won compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The release date is the 31st of this month. Pre-sale begins on the 19th. Samsung Electronics usually unveils its new Galaxy S model every February, but this year it moved the release schedule forward by about 15 days, major smartphone companies to launch an AI phone.”
