A Patient with A Chip Implanted In His Brain from brain-computer interface (BCI) developer Neuralink can now move a computer mouse on the screen just by thinking, company founder Elon Musk said.

Neuralink received approval for clinical trials of a brain implant chip in May last year and implanted the chip into the human brain for the first time on the 28th of last month. U.S. media reported that Musk said at an event held on the night of the 19th on Social Media “Neuralink is now trying to get patients to click as many times as possible,” he added. However, no further details were mentioned.

The identity of the first patient to undergo the procedure was not disclosed, but last year Neuralink announced that it was conducting clinical trials on patients with quadriplegia caused by cervical spinal cord injury or Lou Gehrig’s disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

This device, called Telepathy, consists of a chip the size of a coin and 64 wires with electrodes. The total number of electrodes on each wire is 1024. This method involves implanting a chip in the skull and then connecting electrodes to neurons (nerve cells) in the cerebral cortex that are responsible for movement. The electrodes send signals from neurons to the chip, which then wirelessly sends the signals to the computer.

Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, aims to wirelessly connect a chip implanted in a person’s brain and a computer to enable communication using only thoughts.

Some are also criticizing Neuralink for not disclosing nearly any details about the surgery and results. According to CNB, the Hastings Center, a private think tank, recently criticized “science through press releases” in a blog post, saying, “Unprecedented experiments on vulnerable people must include official reporting to the public.” “I do,” he claimed.

Neuralink previously released a video in 2021 in which a monkey with a chip implanted in its brain plays a computer game using only its thoughts. However, some have raised suspicions that many animals, including monkeys, were sacrificed during the experiment.

Regarding this, Musk said in September of last year, “No monkeys have died due to Neuralink implantation,” and “We chose ‘terminal’ monkeys to minimize the risk to healthy monkeys.
