Instagram Reels Also Reduces Political Content Recommendations

Meta announced that it would Reduces Political Content Recommendations charged content on social media services Instagram and Threads. “It’s an extension of our years of research into how we approach and deal with political content,” said Mehta spokesman Danny Lever. However, each user can receive content containing political content depending on their settings.

Mehta announced on its official blog on the 10th (local time) that it will not actively recommend political content on Instagram and threads. Recommendations will be made for accounts that users follow (subscribe to), but the policy is not to expose political content to accounts that do not follow (subscribe). Reels, Instagram’s short-form video service, also does not recommend political content from accounts you do not follow. Meta has previously reduced the exposure of political content on social media services. In 2021, Mehta said he would adjust Facebook’s algorithms to reduce exposure to political content.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an earnings call for the fourth quarter of 2020, “As part of our efforts to prevent divisive conversations on Facebook’s News Feed, we are considering reducing political content in users’ News Feeds.” It is interpreted as a response to criticism that false information was actively recommended through Facebook during the presidential election, leading to the occupation of the U.S. Capitol.

The goal is to reduce the distribution of false information and content that triggers conflict while preventing conversations or content about politics from being highlighted in the news feed. In particular, as there are major elections such as the 2024 US presidential election, related measures appear to have been strengthened on Instagram and Thread as well. Facebook has been reducing exposure to news for several other reasons.

In 2018, Meta reduced the frequency of exposure of pages such as companies and media, rather than personal accounts, on the Facebook News Feed. At that time, the reorganization was carried out as the user environment was hindered by the appearance of a lot of corporate information and media news feeds rather than friends’ news on Facebook. Afterwards, as the dispute over news prices continued, news services were further reduced. As the algorithm is adjusted, the amount of news exposure related to politics is expected to decrease as well.
