Serious Security Threat: US Russia Is Developing Space Nuclear Weapons To Destroy Satellites

Serious security threat U.S. intelligence officials have determined that Russia is developing a new weapon that can neutralize satellites with nuclear weapons. The United States is known to have warned its European allies that in an emergency, Russia could pose a serious strategic threat by destroying reconnaissance and communication satellites.

The Washington Post (WP) reported on the 14th (local time), citing multiple officials familiar with new classified information, that Russia is developing a space-based military capability that can damage reconnaissance or communications satellites with nuclear weapons. The exact nature of the new system is unclear, but one official referred to it as “Russia’s new space threat capability.” One lawmaker who was briefed on classified information described it as a potential strategic game changer. WP reported that Russia has been conducting experiments to neutralize satellites through radioactive emissions by detonating nuclear weapons in space. ABC also reported, Russia is trying to deploy anti-satellite nuclear weapons in space. 

The Russian Kremlin dismissed these reports. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS on the 15th, It is clear that the White House is using all its means to get the U.S. Congress to vote on a bill allocating funds (to support Ukraine), and added, We will see what tactics the White House uses. He said. In 2021, Russia has been strengthening its satellite attack capabilities, including conducting tests to intercept ‘Chelina -D’, a spy satellite used to capture wireless communications during the former Soviet Union.

At the time of the intercept test, the U.S. Department of Defense warned that    Russia is deploying capabilities that could actively restrict U.S. and allied access to and use of space.   Reuters reported, citing sources, that the United States has notified European allies and Congress of new information regarding Russian nuclear capabilities that could pose an international threat.   The source said, however, that the new capabilities do not pose an imminent threat to the United States.

Russia’s new weapon is said to have not yet been deployed into orbit. In relation to this, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, a Republican, issued a statement on this day, saying, The Intelligence Committee has made information regarding serious national security threats available to all members of Congress, and added, that President Joe Biden has declassified all information related to this threat. It must be done, he requested. Rep. Jim Himes, the Democratic ranking member on the Intelligence Committee, also said, we have identified an urgent problem related to unstable foreign military capabilities that all congressional policymakers should be aware of.

However, he added, it is not an issue that should cause panic right away. Defense and security officials, including White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, decided to meet with members of the Gang of Eight, the leadership of both parties in the Senate and House of Representatives, on the 15th. At a briefing on the 14th, Assistant Secretary Sullivan said, I was a little surprised that Rep. Turner came out publicly ahead of the meeting, and when asked about the true nature of the threat, he avoided answering, saying, I am not in a position to say anything further.
