Ahead of the launch of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Korea and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are pursuing cooperation in building a lunar vehicle and lunar communication network.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 29th that Vice Minister Cho Sung-kyung visited NASA, the U.S. National Space Council (NSpC), and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) on the 23rd and 24th (local time) to discuss cooperation measures.
On the 23rd, Vice Minister Cho met with U.S. NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy and exchanged opinions on ways to cooperate in lunar exploration of Artemis, the U.S.-led manned lunar landing program. The two sides sought long-term cooperation plans, such as building a lunar vehicle and lunar communication network, by applying Korea’s strengths in mobility, secondary batteries, 5G, autonomous driving, and nuclear technology to space exploration. In addition, the Ministry of Science and ICT explained that the discovery of specific research cooperation items and additional cooperation between the Korea Aerospace Administration and NASA were discussed.
Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy expressed great interest in the direction of Korea’s aerospace policy and the direction of the Aerospace Administration.
In a meeting with Chirac Parikh, Secretary General of the White House Space Committee, opinions were shared on the need for cooperation between the two countries’ aerospace companies and the government’s support for smooth cooperation.
In addition, during his visit to JPL, Vice Minister Cho shared various opinions with about 20 Korean scientists working at the research institute on the direction of the Aerospace Administration’s operation, annual salary, and attracting top talent. In fact, they are scouting for Korean scientists at JPL for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which is scheduled to be launched in May.
