Putin Runs For 5th Term As An Independent

Putin runs for 5th term as an independent… Official registration of presidential candidacy today. Russia’s Central Election Commission announced today (29th, local time) that President Vladimir Putin has been officially registered as a candidate for the presidential election to be held in March.

According to TASS news agency, Ella Pamfilova, head of Russia’s Central Election Commission, said, “We have unanimously decided to register Vladimir Putin as a candidate for the Russian Federation presidential election.”

President Putin submitted signatures of support from 315,000 voters on the 22nd to register as an independent candidate. To register as an independent presidential candidate in Russia, you must obtain and submit signatures of support from between 300,000 and 315,000 people in 40 regions across the country.

The National Election Commission announced that after verifying 60,000 signatures among the signatures submitted by President Putin’s election headquarters, 91 signatures (0.15%) were invalidated due to inaccurate voter information.

However, the National Election Commission explained, “The remaining 314,909 signatures are valid, which is sufficient to register as a candidate.” President Putin, who took over as acting president following the sudden resignation of former President Boris Yeltsin on December 31, 1999, has been in power for four terms except for 2008-2012, when he served as prime minister after first winning the presidential election in 2000. If he succeeds in winning a fifth term in this election, President Putin will extend his power until 2030.

With President Putin likely to be re-elected, the National Election Commission plans to finalize the list of candidates by the 10th of next month. Previously, three members of parliamentary parties that do not need to submit support signatures registered as presidential candidates, including Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), Nikolai Kharitonov of the Russian Communist Party, and Vladislav Davanko of the New People Party.

In addition, independent and outside party candidates wishing to run in the presidential election must submit signatures of support from more than 300,000 and 100,000 voters, respectively, to the National Election Commission by the 31st.
