In particular, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Borrell repeatedly emphasized on this day that the EU does not participate in military attacks. “The purpose is to protect ships. It only works to block attacks on ships and does not engage in any kind of military activity against Houthi forces. In other words, it only prevents Houthi attacks,” he emphasized.

At the meeting, EU defense ministers decide which member state will lead this naval mission. France, Germany and Italy are vying for this role. Ministers will also discuss the operation. It is also decided where to place the headquarters.

According to foreign media, seven EU member countries are prepared to provide ships or fighter jets. France and Italy have already deployed warships near the Red Sea, and Belgium and Germany are sending warships.

The U.S. and British forces jointly attacked Houthi rebels’ military facilities in western Yemen on the 11th and 12th, and jointly attacked eight facilities last week. In the meantime, the U.S. military alone carried out four attacks. has been attacking commercial ships passing through the Red Sea with drones and missiles since November 19, about a month after the Israel-Hamas war.

Meanwhile, final consent from 27 member states is required for the EU’s military operation to be finalized next month.
